Overview

UQ has taken on the gut rehab of three small homes in Queens that are part of a portfolio of foreclosed properties. The homes are sold to a public/private entity that renovates them to green building standards and sells them at subsidized rates. The program strengthens neighborhoods and creates affordable home-ownership opportunities.

A GC that we have worked with on other projects told us about the program after first round of properties were in the process of being completed. The single-family homes in this portfolio are mainly foreclosed properties that are owned by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and are in various states of distress.

We responded to the RFQ for the second round of homes and were designated as the Architect for three houses in South Ozone Park, Queens adjacent to JFK Airport. Because of the volume of homes in the program and the consistent standards and specifications, the program can achieve a respectable level of energy efficiency at relatively low cost.
